Retail Therapy 2

(Updated)

Managed to get a full refund today for my purchase at H&M without much of a hassle.

At first the cashier charged my credit card again instead of refunding the amount, but the manager quickly took care of that by giving me a double refund. I'm very sure the cashier had no intention to charge my card again. It was a genuine mistake. If I were shopping in China, then I won't be so sure.

There was no question asked as to why I was returning the coat.

The manager said that I would get back my money from the credit card company within 30 days from today.

I'm glad that went well.

Retail Therapy

While the political satire in Selangor continues ...

While some were sunbathing on the beach ...

I was at H&M where I bought a coat on a whim. Now I want to return it. The retailer did say "buy now, decide later".

Let's see what happens when I bring it back to the retail store. I have 30 days to return or exchange it, according to the receipt.

Yanti's Tailor-Made For Success

By Chuah Bee Kim

MERSING: WHAT started as a hobby is now business for Yanti Suhaila Abu Samah.

She started out by sewing beads on her own blouse. When Yanti wore her beaded blouse to a function, a friend who saw her work, asked her to adorn the latter’s scarf with beads as well, and paid RM50 for it.

The incident inspired Yanti, 26, who has a degree in architecture, to start designing her own scarves and shawls and adorn them with lace or beads.

Four years ago, she started selling her scarves and shawls online and attracted customers from Brunei and Singapore.

Buoyed by the success of her online venture, Yanti decided to open a physical boutique early this year.

Her Kuntum Boutique is in Kampung Makam here.

“My customers want their scarves and shawls to be made to match their attire,” said Yanti .

“Most of my customers are locals who are looking for quality products and the latest fashion.

“I like to work with satin, chiffon and crepe as they are soft and graceful and comfortable when worn.

“The most sought-after among my scarves and shawls are those made using chiffon,” she said.

“Chiffon is quite difficult to work with because it is lightweight and slippery.

“My scarves are different from what is available in the market as I adorn them with lace or beads, or both. I want my brand Kuntum to be exclusive and in keeping with the times,” she said.

Yanti said she has always encouraged others to be entrepreneurs.

“I also offer franchising opportunities and I am also looking for dealers of my products,” she added.

In conjunction with Hari Raya, Yanti has created a collection of scarves and shawls.

Classy and Modern

ELEGANT LOOK: MyDezigner Label boutique offers chic and trendy clothes and Muslim attire

JOHOR BARU: FOR those looking for designer wear that screams class and modern casual, head down to MyDezigner Label (MDL), a newly-opened boutique in Bandar Baru Uda here.

The boutique, located at No 39, Jalan Padi Emas 1/3, is a branch of MDL in NEO Damansara in Damansara Perdana, Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Owner Nora Zakaria, 47, said her daughter Muniera Syaza Johari, 22, is also one of the partners of the boutique.

Nora Zakaria (centre) with her daughter Muniera Syaza Johari (left) and Ain Abd Majid operate MyDezigner Label boutique.

Another partner is Ain Abd Majid, 34, who is known for having founded the Label Hijau Gallery which specialises in Islamic clothing for women.

Nora, who has her own NORA of Galeri Muslimah label, is also well-known in the fashion industry as her fashionwear has found its way into markets in Singapore, Doha in Qatar and Dubai in United Arab Emirates.

Nora said her daughter Muniera Syaza, who graduated from Raffles College, designs for the young and trendy.

"She is a very creative girl and her designs are modern and chic. The younger clients love her creations.

"As for me, I did not graduate from any fashion course. After I got married in 1991, I was encouraged by my husband to start a business.

"So, I opened a shoe shop in Kuala Lumpur. Although business was thriving, I was not satisfied. It just did not bring me the satisfaction that I was craving for.

"Most of the shoes that I sourced from a supplier were of the same design. Soon, life got monotonous," she said.

Nora said her boredom prompted her to take up sewing lessons.

"In 1996, I was ready to open a tailoring shop and the orders started pouring in, some from prominent designers."

After several years, her husband opened a factory for Nora to mass produce tudung and clothing for Muslim women.

Nora, who idolises renowned fashion icons Yves Saint Laurent, Dries Van Noten and John Galliano, got her own designer label (NORA) last year.

For The Love Of All Things Indian

JOHOR BAHRU: ONE need no longer make several stops at different places for Indian jewellery, accessories and hand-stitched embroidery -- at least, not during Global Indian Fiesta 2014.

A treasure trove of Indian products and food, the exhibition organised by the Malaysia-India Chamber of Commerce (Maicom) will be held at Galleria@Kotaraya, here, from Saturday to March 30, 10am to 10pm daily.

Maicom deputy president D.P. Ganapathy said local and overseas exhibitors would be setting up over 60 booths featuring textiles, saree, Punjabi suits, men's traditional attire, fashion accessories, cosmetics, spices and condiments.

There will also be North Indian sweets, Indian cuisine, Indian dishes, herbal products, interior decor and wooden and metal carvings.

Visitors will find products from Kashmir, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.

Visitors will also be able to find foreign and local Indian products that are only available at the Global Indian Fiesta.

After Johor Baru, the event, which ended in Sungai Petani, Kedah, two weeks ago, will be making its way to Shah Alam, from May 23 to June 1.

"After Shah Alam, it will head for Penang, Ipoh and back to Kuala Lumpur for the Deepavali celebration in October.

"Among the entertainment highlights are singing performances, talk shows, games and talent quests," said Ganapathy.

For details, visit the Maicom Facebook page.

Malaysian beauties Johor Baru City Square promotions executives Joyce Lee (left) and Elizabeth Koh on the 6th floor of the shopping mall in Johor Baru seen here with one of the 11 angel statues put up in the mall.

Lee said the mall spent RM250,000 on the Christmas decor themed "Lil' Bits of Heaven".

Well done!  It does feel like "Heaven is a place on Earth," in my humble opinion.

Merry Christmas!!!
